The Andhra Pradesh government has issued a no objection certificate (NOC) to Vedanta’s Cairn Oil & Gas division for hydrocarbon development in Krishna district.
The approval covers the development of 20 onshore oil and gas wells in Vedanta’s block under the Machilipatnam division. During the evaluation process, 15 initially proposed drilling locations were identified as falling within sensitive canal and water network zones and were directed to be relocated. The remaining 20 locations, situated more than 500 metres away from these sensitive areas, were cleared for development.
The decision was taken following detailed assessments of the Krishna Delta canal system and its irrigation sensitivity, amid concerns over potential impacts on water resources. As per the approval conditions, Vedanta is not permitted to draw water from surface sources and must ensure that drilling activities do not cause any contamination.
The company has also proposed the use of groundwater, which will require separate regulatory approvals. Officials stated that the Water Resources Department will have the authority to conduct inspections without prior notice and suspend operations in the event of non-compliance.
