India’s captive and commercial coal mines delivered strong performance in June 2025, with production reaching 15.57 million tonnes (MT) and dispatches at 17.31 MT, underscoring the sector’s continued momentum.
In the first quarter of FY 2025–26, coal production rose by 16.39% year-on-year, while dispatches increased by 13.03% compared to the same period last year. These gains reflect improved operational efficiency and better utilisation of mining resources. A performance review of the last three first-quarter periods shows consistent growth in both production and dispatch, highlighting the sector’s expanding capacity and resilience.
Among key developments in June, mine opening permission was granted for the Utkal A Mine, which has a Peak Rated Capacity (PRC) of 25 MT—a significant step toward enhancing domestic coal availability. Additionally, vesting orders were issued for three coal blocks, bringing the total number of blocks allocated by the Ministry of Coal to over 200.
