Nalco's Pottangi Bauxite Mine Launch Set for June

State-owned Nalco is preparing to start operations at its Pottangi bauxite mines in Odisha by next June as part of its strategy to enhance mining capacity and expand its integrated aluminium business. Nalco CMD Brijendra Pratap Singh said Dilip Buildcon has emerged as the lowest bidder for developing and operating the mine, and the project is advancing toward the planned launch.

The company is also boosting alumina production at its Damanjodi refinery by adding a fifth stream, which will increase capacity by 1 MTPA, raising total output from 2.275 MTPA. To ensure a stable supply of raw material for the expanded facility, the Odisha government has granted Nalco a 50-year mining lease covering nearly 698 hectares at Pottangi.

CMD Singh added that bauxite availability will remain secure even if production begins later than planned, noting that Nalco has an alternative sourcing project in place. The company’s ongoing expansion is expected to reinforce its leadership in the aluminium sector and contribute to Odisha’s industrial growth.
