Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro) is expanding its fleet with 16 new train sets for Nagpur Metro Phase 2, which is currently under full-scale construction across four corridors. Each train set will have three coaches, adding a total of 48 new coaches at an estimated cost of ₹576 crore.
To increase ridership, MahaMetro plans to extend operating hours to accommodate night-shift workers and airport travelers. At present, Nagpur Metro operates 23 trains with 69 coaches, running at a frequency of 15 minutes during non-peak hours and 10 minutes during peak hours. The system infrastructure allows a maximum frequency of 1.3 minutes, subject to adequate rolling stock availability.
A tender has been issued for the procurement of new trains, along with personnel training and a 15-year annual maintenance contract for the selected bidder. Additionally, MahaMetro has submitted a detailed project report (DPR) to the state government, seeking approval for 300 buses to enhance last-mile connectivity.
