Bright Skies, Brighter Future: The Rise of the Kajra Solar Hub

The Bihar State Power Generation Company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the North Bihar and South Bihar power distribution companies to supply electricity from the state’s fully owned 185 MW solar power project, supported by a 282 MWh battery energy storage system, at Kajra.

Located in Lakhisarai district, the facility is currently the country’s largest solar-plus-storage project and represents a significant boost to Bihar’s clean energy infrastructure. The first phase of the ₹1,810 crore project began commercial operations around 10 days ago, following the award of the work order to L&T in July 2024.

The second phase, now under construction at an estimated cost of ₹1,055 crore, will expand the project’s total capacity to 301 MW of solar power and 523 MWh of battery storage by January 2027. Power generated during daylight hours will be stored and supplied during non-solar periods, helping ensure grid stability and uninterrupted electricity supply.

Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav said, “The Kajra project will significantly strengthen uninterrupted power supply while expanding Bihar’s green energy footprint.”
