The Union government has pledged full support for the expansion and modernisation of the Kothagudem Thermal Power Station (KTPS) in Bhadradri Kothagudem district, Telangana.
The assurance was given by Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik in response to a request raised by Khammam MP R. Raghurama Reddy under Rule 377 during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
KTPS currently operates four units with a combined capacity of 1,800 MW. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change had granted clearance for Stage-VII of the plant back in 2015. As part of its long-term strategy, the Telangana State Power Generation Corporation (TSGENCO) plans to decommission the ageing A, B, and C stations by 2025.
The proposed next phase includes setting up two new 800 MW units within the existing premises. A detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared for the same. The Central government will assist with environmental clearances, coal linkages, and other key approvals to ensure timely execution of the project.
