Torrent Power to energize Madhya Pradesh with 1,600 MW project

Torrent Power has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from MP Power Management Company Limited (MPPMCL) for the development of a 1,600 MW coal-based ultra-supercritical thermal power project in Madhya Pradesh.

The greenfield project, comprising two units of 800 MW each, will be developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) model. The entire power output will be supplied to MPPMCL through a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) at a tariff of ₹5.829/kWh. Coal for the project will be sourced by MPPMCL under the Ministry of Coal’s SHAKTI Policy.

With an estimated investment of ₹22,000 crore, this marks Torrent Group’s largest single investment in the power sector to date. The project is slated for commissioning within 72 months.

In addition to strengthening the state’s power infrastructure, the project is expected to create substantial employment—approximately 8,000–10,000 jobs during the construction phase and around 1,500 during operations. The use of ultra-supercritical technology will enable higher thermal efficiency and lower emissions, aligning with national goals for cleaner coal-based power generation.
