Rs 103 Crore Boost for Textiles: Govt Approves 11 Technical Textile Projects

The government has given the green light to 11 project proposals in the field of technical textiles, with an overall value of nearly Rs 103 crore. Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister for Textiles, Commerce, and Industry, approved these proposals during the eighth meeting of the Mission Steering Group (MSG) of the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM), which he chaired.

These projects encompass a variety of areas within technical textiles, including nine Research and Development (R&D) projects, one project focused on machine development, and another on equipment development. The diverse applications of technical textiles covered by these projects include two each in Protech, Meditech, and Mobiltech, one in Buildtech, two in Smart Textiles, and one project in Sustainable Textiles. Notably, one of the projects is dedicated to the development of high-strength carbon fiber for strategic applications, aimed at achieving self-reliance in this domain for India.

In terms of leadership and involvement, research projects within the approved proposals are spearheaded by institutions such as CSIR-NAL, ATIRA, NITRA, IIT Delhi, ICT-Mumbai, and others.

During the meeting, the Union Minister conducted a comprehensive review of various aspects of the NTTM, including the progress of sanctioned R&D projects, the status of applications under the General Guidelines for Enabling Academic Institutes in Technical Textiles Education in India (Round-II), and the implementation of quality control orders (QCOs). Additionally, the review covered patent guidelines for R&D, outreach activities, and events under NTTM. Minister Goyal emphasized the imperative for strengthened collaboration between the government and industry to foster the indigenous development of technical textiles products.
