The Maharashtra State Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has approved a major redevelopment plan for MHADA housing projects across Mumbai and its suburbs.
The initiative targets housing colonies spread over 20 acres or more, aiming to replace aging and structurally weak buildings with modern, safe, and affordable homes. MHADA’s Mumbai division—responsible for constructing 56 colonies in the 1950s and 1960s—will now lead the redevelopment of nearly 5,000 cooperative societies. The plan seeks to resolve long-standing issues such as cramped units, outdated amenities, and inadequate infrastructure. The new developments will feature contemporary facilities including lifts, ample parking, landscaped gardens, gyms, and schools.
MHADA will directly oversee 114 projects to ensure adherence to quality, safety, and design standards. The initiative is expected to significantly enhance urban living conditions and could serve as a model for large-scale redevelopment in other Indian cities.
